Why I love Corona?

Because Corona gave me a “second life”. Let me explain.

I used to be a programmer 30 years ago when green screens were the only computers around. I enjoyed creating business applications but my career moved me up the management ladder and programming was put on the back burner.

Over the years, new technology emerged and new industries like gaming evolved into mainstream and I was so amazed at people who could write games. I admired the developer’s creativity in all aspects of game development from storyboarding, game design to game coding.  Soon, mobile apps became mainstream.  And, I often thought to myself that gaming especially mobile games was just “too enormous” of a challenge for me.

Until I bumped into CoronaSDK (it was called that) about 2 years ago. Corona gave it for free. Well, I downloaded and started playing with it. With plenty of forums, excellent documentation and superior stability, Corona helped me  create a dice throwing game on my Android phone in less than 3 weeks. I was ecstatic. The “latent programmer” in me was woken up.  I started to explore the many features like scenes, plugins and multi-touch features, and created other simple games.

I soon realised that I can write games, and I was impressed with myself. I learned about sprites and I was drawing as well. However, games was not my forte but I did create an information finder app.

In 2016 and 2017, Georgetown Festival agreed to use the information finder app for the festival. This was a major milestone for me and it gave me more confidence in my programming skills.

My next goal was to develop app for teaching kids. I created a simplified art drawing program to teach art techniques, even though I didn’t know much about art.

The art program is now being adopted by a church for an outreach program for underprivileged kids. The app not only forced me to learn about kids’ art techniques but also to do it too. So I am learning a new skill at the same time. I am now creating another more sophisticated drawing app to draw caricatures.

Corona gave me my passion back, and I hope Corona will continue to extend this for a long time to come, especially to people like me who never thought of achieving something as sophisticated as game / mobile app development. Corona’s free approach has given people who really can’t afford to buy, yet are able to pursue their passion of programming (and not make money). Corona’s support is also excellent. Every question is quickly answered by Rob or other Corona community members.

Over the last two years, Corona has given me much joy, which I hope will last for many more years to come. Thank you, Corona.
